Motorcyclists’ and car drivers’ responses to hazards

چکیده
This study assessed the degree to which hazardous vignettes are perceived as dangerous and realistic by car drivers and motorcycle riders (Exp. 1) and whether riders could be distinguished from drivers on their performance in a commercial motorcycle simulator during safe and hazardous riding situations using the same hazards (Exp. 2). In Experiment 1, car drivers and motorcyclists received a questionnaire which consisted of short descriptions of the scenarios used in the simulator. Half of the car drivers and half of the motorcyclists were told to imagine they were driving a car through the scenario. The other halves were told to imagine they were riding a motorcycle. Respondents with the mindset of a motorcyclist rated the scenarios as more realistic than respondents with a car driver’s mindset. Real-life riders however reported the scenarios as more dangerous than real-life drivers, suggesting that their specific motorcycle experience influenced their criterion for danger. In Experiment 2, naïve participants navigated a simulated route with the same hazards. Performance was coded on objective (e.g., crashes) and subjective (e.g., riding safety and skill) criteria. Experiential differences on some of the measures (and the absence of such differences on other measures) suggest that the simulator is useful for distinguishing riders from drivers during safe periods of riding but not necessarily during hazardous periods of riding. The implications of why hazard vignettes discriminate but the same simulated hazards do not are discussed, with emphasis on the crucial elements required to design a successful simulated hazard. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Hazard Perception and Responding by Motorcyclists – Background and Literature Review
This project is the first stage of a larger program of research into hazard perception training for motorcyclists. Future stages of the project will investigate what type of environment can be used to teach hazard perception and responding, for example a simulator environment or combination of off-road and simulator training. This report summarises the research that has been conducted into haza...
متن کاملCar drivers' attitudes towards motorcyclists: a survey.
Motorcyclists are over-represented in UK traffic accident statistics. Many car-motorcycle accidents are however due to the inappropriate actions of car drivers. It is predicted that car drivers at risk of collision with motorcycles have divergent attitudes and beliefs about motorcyclists compared to safer drivers, which may lead to a deficient mental model guiding their interactions with motorc...
متن کاملA comparison of hazard perception and responding in car drivers and motorcyclists
Poor hazard perception skills have been shown to contribute to novice driver crash involvement. Yet driving and riding differ in terms of hazards, responses and consequences and many novice motorcyclists are experienced drivers. Therefore the extent to which the findings of research into car driver hazard perception and responding are relevant to motorcyclists may be limited. This paper present...
متن کاملHazard Perception by Inexperienced Motorcyclists Accident Research Centre Hazard Perception by Inexperienced Motorcyclists
The project aimed to investigate how hazard perception and responding is affected by level of experience as a motorcycle rider and to assess the extent to which hazard perception and responding can be improved by specific training. The literature review showed that car drivers with fewer crashes and older or more experienced drivers respond more quickly on hazard perception tasks and that at le...

Road traffic casualties ( RTC) present a major health problem in Iran with a significant number of death and injuries among drivers, passengers and pedestrians of all ages. The purpose of this study was to achieve an understanding and knowledge about the pattern of the accident,s casualties in the city of Kerman. During one year period ( 1994-1995) all in- patient and out- patient cases referre...
